Pune to Mumbai is one of the busiest intercity roads in Maharashtra. Every day people make the trip for work, flights, family visits and hospital appointments. A cab is often the easiest way: door-to-door, no luggage worries, and you can work or rest on the way.

The distance is about 150 km, almost all of it on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. The drive itself takes around three hours, but the time inside Mumbai changes a lot by the hour. Here is how to plan it.

The route: the Mumbai–Pune Expressway

From Pune, cabs join the Expressway near Kiwale or Dehu Road, climb through the Sahyadri hills near Lonavala and Khandala, and come down the ghat towards Khalapur and Panvel. From there the road enters Mumbai through Navi Mumbai and Vashi, or continues towards Thane, depending on where you are going.

  • Pune to Lonavala: fast Expressway driving, about an hour from most of Pune.
  • Lonavala and Khandala ghat: beautiful in the monsoon, but it can be foggy; drivers slow down for safety.
  • Panvel to your destination in Mumbai: this is where most of the trip time varies.

The Expressway is a toll road. Tolls are paid as actual unless your booking says they are included, and the driver gives you the receipts.

How long does Pune to Mumbai take?

  • Early morning (before 6 am): about 3 hours to South or Central Mumbai.
  • Daytime on weekdays: 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic inside Mumbai.
  • Evenings and Friday nights: traffic into and around Mumbai is heaviest; allow extra time.
  • Weekends and long holidays: the Lonavala section gets busy with tourists, especially in the monsoon.

The western suburbs (Andheri, Bandra, Borivali) and South Mumbai take longer to reach than Navi Mumbai, Thane or Chembur.

Going to Mumbai airport

Many Pune to Mumbai trips end at the airport. To avoid stress:

  1. Tell us your flight time and terminal when booking.
  2. Plan to reach the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one, as airlines advise, and add a buffer for traffic.
  3. For early morning flights, a night departure from Pune is usually smooth because the roads are empty.

One way or round trip?

Most people book a one-way cab from Pune to Mumbai: you pay only for the drop, not for the car's return to Pune. A round trip suits same-day business meetings, hospital visits or family events, when you want the car to wait and bring you back.

Tips for a comfortable trip

  • Share the exact pickup and drop address with a landmark, especially in large housing societies and IT parks.
  • Carry a light jacket in the monsoon and winter; the ghat section can be cool.
  • Want a stop in Lonavala? Tell the driver at the start; many travellers like a quick break for chikki or a meal.
  • Travelling with heavy luggage or a family of five or more? Choose a 6-seater MPV.

In Pune, we pick up from every part of the city, including Hinjewadi, Wakad, Baner, Aundh, Kothrud, Hadapsar, Kharadi, Viman Nagar and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Pickups from the western side of Pune, close to the Expressway, are the quickest.

In Mumbai, common drops include Navi Mumbai (Vashi, Belapur, Kharghar), Thane, Andheri, Bandra and the western suburbs, Powai, and South Mumbai. Navi Mumbai and Thane are the closest to the Expressway; South Mumbai and the western suburbs take the longest.

Travelling in the monsoon

The Lonavala–Khandala ghat is at its most beautiful from June to September, with waterfalls and mist over the hills. It also means rain, fog and slower traffic on weekends when tourists drive up from both cities. Leave a little earlier than usual, and trust your driver to slow down in low visibility.
